- Alexander Montessori Wildcats maintains concussion management protocols and guidelines designed to promote athlete safety, education, injury recognition, proper response, and safe return to play. 1. Education and Communication The program will provide concussion and head injury information to parents/guardians, athletes, and coaches in written or electronic form. This information will include: * The nature and risks of concussions and head injuries. * Prevention and preparedness strategies to help keep athletes safe. * Signs and symptoms of a possible concussion. * The importance of reporting symptoms immediately. * The risks of continuing to play after a suspected concussion or head injury. * The steps required before an athlete may return to play. Parents/guardians and coaches are encouraged to review educational materials from the CDC HEADS UP program. The CDC notes that concussion signs and symptoms may appear immediately or may take hours or days to be noticed. 2. Recognition of Possible Concussion Coaches and staff will monitor athletes for signs or symptoms that may include, but are not limited to: * Headache or pressure in the head * Dizziness or balance problems * Nausea or vomiting * Blurry or double vision * Sensitivity to light or noise * Confusion, feeling foggy, sluggish, or groggy * Difficulty concentrating or remembering * Appearing dazed, stunned, or confused * Moving clumsily or showing poor coordination * Answering questions slowly * Behavior, mood, or personality changes * Loss of consciousness, even briefly Any athlete showing signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or head injury will be treated as having a suspected concussion. 3. Immediate Removal From Activity If an athlete is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury during practice, training, tryouts, games, or any program activity, the athlete will be immediately removed from participation. The athlete will not be allowed to return to activity the same day when a concussion or head injury is suspected. When in doubt, the athlete sits out. Florida law requires that a youth athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury be immediately removed from the activity and not return until written medical clearance is provided. 4. Parent/Guardian Notification The parent or guardian will be notified as soon as reasonably possible after a suspected concussion or head injury. Parents/guardians will be advised to monitor the athlete and seek medical evaluation from an appropriate healthcare professional. Emergency medical care should be sought immediately if danger signs are present, including repeated vomiting, worsening headache, seizures, slurred speech, weakness, unusual behavior, increasing confusion, inability to wake up, or one pupil larger than the other. 5. Medical Clearance Required Before Return An athlete removed due to a suspected concussion or head injury may not return to practice, games, training, tryouts, or competition until the program receives written medical clearance from an appropriate healthcare professional trained in the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of concussions. The clearance must state that the athlete no longer exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or head injury and is medically cleared to return to athletic activity. 6. Graduated Return to Play Return to sports should be gradual and supervised. The CDC states that return to sports is a multi-step process and that an athlete should only return with approval from a healthcare provider. Once written clearance is received, the athlete may be gradually reintroduced to activity. If symptoms return at any stage, the athlete must stop activity and be re-evaluated before continuing. 7. Coach and Staff Responsibility All coaches and staff are expected to enforce this protocol consistently. Coaches may not override a suspected concussion removal decision or allow an athlete to return without proper written clearance. The safety and well-being of the athlete will always take priority over participation in practices, games, tournaments, or team events. 8. Recordkeeping The program will maintain records of concussion-related communications, parent/guardian notifications, incident reports, and written medical clearances when applicable.
